Nacht und Träume D.827 (Franz Schubert) arr. Cello & Piano
Sarah Acres (Cello) & Albert Combrink (Piano)
Published in 1825 as Op.43 No 2, D.827 was composed in the winter of 1822/1823. It is remarkable in Schubert’s “Night Song” ouevre, and it remains one of the pinnacles of his output. Notoriously difficult to perform and deceptive in its simplicity, it makes a perfect transition to the cello.

Nacht und Träume D.827 (Franz Schubert)
Text by Matthäus Kasimir von Collin (1779 – 1824) , “Nachtfeier”. German Lyrics:
Heil’ge Nacht, du sinkest nieder;
Nieder wallen auch die Träume
Wie dein Mondlicht durch die Räume,
Durch der Menschen stille Brust.
Die belauschen sie mit Lust;
Rufen, wenn der Tag erwacht:
Kehre wieder, heil’ge Nacht!
Holde Träume, kehret wieder!
Nacht und Träume D827 (Franz Schubert)
Text by Matthäus Kasimir von Collin (1779 – 1824) , “Nachtfeier”. English Translation by Abert Combrink
Holy night, you sink down; Floating down also are the dreams Like your moonlight through the rooms, Through the people's silent breast. They listen to it with delight. They listen to it with delight Call, when the day awakes: Come back, holy night! Precious dreams, come back again! Hallo, What a beautiful performance. I wanted to download the Cello and piano version, but this is “only” in the treble clef. Is there a version with cello/piano??? Or do we have to transpose it?
thank you so much.

How lovely to hear that you enjoyed it! We play it in B Major I think, and Sarah plays the cello part in the appropriate key by transposing off the Piano/Vocal score. We experiment with keys, tempos etc, until we find a version of our own that makes us both happy and says what we want to say about the song. We did an entire French Song programme and followed it with a German one, and stylistically the playing style is very different for the German. What a lovely process it has been. Thanks for commenting!
