Brendan van Rhyn  is a free-lance actor based in Jozi with a 3-year Musical Theatre Diploma from the Tshwane University of Technology (1998-2000). His alter-ego, the deliciously decadent Cathy Specific, is undoubtedly South Africa’s First Lady of Flying and everyone’s favourite “Queen of the Skies” – a clear indication that he is at his best in lipstick and lashes! It all began for Brendan with a touring production of The Beggar’s Opera (1996) whilst on an exchange programme in England as well as being selected to study at the prestigious London School of Musical Theatre, at the Old Vic (1997). Instead, he returned to South Africa to complete his studies and pursue a career on home soil.

Brendan is a two-time Naledi Award nominee for Best Male Performance in a Musical (The Rocky Horror Show in 2008 and Tree Aan in 2011) and the recipient of a Showtime Award for Best Professional Male Performance in a Musical (Thoroughly Modern Millie – 2009). He also enjoyed a two-and-half year residency as the ‘leading lady’ in the dinner-cirque spectacular, Madame Zingara (2011-2013). Brendan is once again delighted to currently be playing the ‘sweet transvestite’ in The Fugard Theatre’s production of The Rocky Horror Show which has already enjoyed nine sold-out months and for which he has just won the coveted Fleur du Cap Award 2014 for Best Male Actor in a Musical. This cult show is currently running in Cape Town till 02 November before returning to Montecasino from 14 November – 01 February 2015
