Russian Trios

Albert Combrink presents a “Heart Music” project on Sunday 22nd October at Erin Hall with a programme of Russian music.

All the pieces chosen are those he has loved for many years and finally has found musicians who feel an equal passion. The Piano Trios have a very special quality – rich and melodious, virtuosic and challenging, and containing some of the most beautifully luscious music in the chamber music repertoire. From the young Rachmaninov’s first passionate foray into the intimate world of the trio, to the almost symphonic scope of the war time trio by the mature Shostakovich, the programme will also include solo works for each of the instruments: Scriabin Piano Etudes, Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata and Vocalise as well as the romantic film soundtrack of Shostakovich’s “Gadfly”.

Albert, one of South Africa’s most versatile pianists, is joined by Cheryl de Havilland on cello and violinist Nicole D’Oliveira. Cheryl – a Royal College of Music graduate who counts Jaqueline du Pre amongst her teachers- is an established performer in orchestral and chamber music, and Nicole is a UCT Graduate with a wide range of performing and teaching interests. Both were recently seen performing as part of the first Cape Town Baroque Festival at St Andrews.

This “Heart Music” project marks their first performance together as a trio. They are joined for some ultra-romantic Tchaikovsky songs, by Albert’s long-time stage partner, the multi-facetted soprano Louise Howlett, known for her performances from Baroque oratorio to Jazz. As always, the artists will introduce the works, providing context and stories to ensure maximum audience engagement for all age-groups.

The concert is held in the beautiful and intimate Erin Hall, Erin Road, Rondebosch at 4pm on Sunday 22nd October. Tickets: R120 /R100 /R80 at the door although advance booking is advised from QUICKET

It is a rare opportunity to see the ensemble in concert where they are able to give full focus to the music. For our concert on 19 August, they will play a carefully selected programme of virtuosic chamber music from the Tango repertoire. Cornerstones of Piazzolla’s works will be interspersed with French and Eastern European concert-tangos, as well as first performances of new works by members of the ensemble itself.

As part of the Baxter 40th birthday celebrations, following the concert there will be a free milonga in the foyer so bring your dancing shoes to dance the night away!

We are very excited to be hosting an intimate fundraiser for the Sunflower Fund. The driving force of this is Amelia Chan, who recently lost her newlywed husband to lymphoma.
Amelia is the Concert Master of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong. She is an exceptional violinist, and will be performing this very personal and moving recital in memory of her late husband, Fred Kleynhans. She is soon to go back to Hong Kong, but would like to express her gratitude to the wonderful haematology team in the Sunflower Ward at Mediclinic Constantiaberg, where Fred was treated. And since he suffered from a blood cancer, the Sunflower Fund had become a cause very close to the couple’s heart.

Violinist Amelia Chan’s performances have taken her around the globe. She has been heard on WQXR, New York; WQED, Pittsburgh; West Virginia Public Broadcasting; BBC Radio Scotland, Scotland; and RTHK Radio 4, Hong Kong. She was formerly concertmaster of the West Virginia Symphony, and has performed extensively with the New York Philharmonic. She has recently collaborated with legendary flautist Sir James Galway as a soloist, and with the French accordionist extraordinaire Richard Galliano in chamber music.

The Gin Bar is privileged to host this benefit concert in memory of Fred Kleynhans. All proceeds of tickets and beverages sold will go to the SunFlower Fund.

The Sunflower Fund creates awareness around the need for blood stem cell donors and provides education as to the process of registering as a donor. We raise funds to cover the tissue-typing costs involved in adding donors onto the South African Registry.

For the first time Classics for All audiences can enjoy a collaboration between music and movement in what promises to be a unique and thought-provoking experience.

“Some Rooms in an Empty House”, one of the Two Works by South African composer Dr Anthony Costandius, is a minimalistic, expressionistic work that takes the listener on a conceptual “House Viewing” during which a total of nine rooms are shown. It starts in the “Green Room” and then moves through “A room of forgotten passions”, “A room for songs”, “On being a monster without under a bed under which to hide”, “A room for touching”, “A room for clocks winding down”, “A room for Fools” and ends in “the Last Room”.

Performance Art group PREMATUUR (see pictures of dancers) gives abstract expression to the music of Costandius through movement. PREMATUUR’s ethos is to shift the boundaries of known theatrical practices by using progressive exploration to establish vocabulary, orchestrated by choreographer Saskia Wicomb.

Musicians (NArrative Ensemble):
Valentina Koleva-Voster and Maretha van der Walt (violin)
Jan-Hendrik Harley (viola)
Cheryl de Havilland (cello)
Albert Combrink (piano)

“The tragic Tale of Torbalan and De Oude Rode Ogen”

The second work, “The tragic Tale of Torbalan and De Oude Rode Ogen” is a satirical opera for violin (Valentina Koleva-Voster) and double bass (Roxane Steffen), based on the legend of a duel between the scary monster-like Torbalan and Oude Rode Ogen, resulting in the rescue of children.

In Greyton so fair
Will be told, for the first time, a tale so rare,
Of Torbalan, the Sackman, and his quest to Linz
And his rival, De Oude Rode Ogen, purveyor of sins.
Both race to steal little Adolf, a boy so rare,
Only to be caught in his wily snare:
Alas, Torbalan and De Oude Rode Ogen both expire,
leaving little Adolf to set the world on fire….

Musicians:
Valentina Koleva-Voster and Maretha van der Walt on violin, Jan-Hendrik Harley on viola, Cheryl de Havilland on cello and Albert Combrink on piano.
Dancers:
Soleil Terblanche, Robert Viljoen, Mandri Sutherland, Gisela Iles and Saskia Wicomb

The performance of TWO WORKS is on Saturday 20 May at 15h00 in the Moravian Church in Greyton. Tickets from Computicket.

CLASSICS FOR ALL GOES TANGO!

The Ehlers family of the historic The Oaks Estate near Greyton invites Classics for All festival-goers to the final concert of the 2017 Classics for All, on Sunday 21 May at 15h00.

Cape Town Tango Ensemble will be performing PIAZZOLLA AND BEYOND, featuring the music of the great Argentinean composer of the 20th Century and Bandoneon virtuoso Astor Piazzolla.

Astor Piazzolla started his new style of music during the 1950’s. It took Tango music from the dance halls of Buenos Aires to the Concert stages throughout the world. Piazzolla inspired many classical musicians to perform his music during his lifetime and after his death.

The Cape Town Tango Ensemble consists of Stanislav Angelov (accordion), Petrus de Beer (violin), Albert Combrink (piano) and Charles Lazar (double bass).

The Oaks Estate will be open to (ticketed) concert-goers from 13h00. Marianne and her team will be selling cake, coffee and tea before and after the concert, while Gert and his helpers will be selling their popular estate wine, the Nguni Shiraz.
