Lynelle Kenned

Lynelle (22) hails from Paarl, and growing up in a musical family, learnt to appreciate classical music from an early age. She received an Exhibition Award from Trinity International Board of Examinations for the highest mark for a practical exam in South Africa in 2005. After forming part of the South African Youth Choir and Stellenberg Girls’ Choir in 2005 and 2006, she enrolled at the UCT Opera School in 2007. She is studying under Prof Virginia Davids. Lynelle has won the Class Medalist Award in 2007, 2008 and 2009. She was also awarded the Chisholm Prize for meritorious work in opera in 2009. She has sung the roles of Frantik and Grasshopper in the 2009 production of Janacek’s “The Cunning Little Vixen”, Maddalena in Rossini’s “Il viaggio a Reims”, and Cherubino in the piano production of Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro” in 2010. This year she also made her debut as soloist with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra at the Youth Music Festival.

Thesele Kemane

Born in Kimberley, Thesele sang in his first solo in Std.2 and he ended school as the winner of the Northern Cape Provincial region of the Tirisano National Choir Competition in 2004. He was chosen for the National Youth Choir which toured to Germany to take part on the World Choir Olympics in Bremen. In 2006 he joined the UCT Opera School where he is a student of Prof. Virginia Davids. He has taken part in productions by Cape Town Opera and the UCT Opera School. Most notably, he took the role of the Forester in Janacek’s Cunning Little Vixen. He sang the role of Don Prudenza in Rossini’s Il Viaggio a Reims. Earlier this year he took the role of Figaro in UCT Opera School’s Kaleidoscope production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. He has performed in recital for the Songmaker’s Guild and the South African Wagner Society. He has already performed in Oratorio such as John Stainer’s Crucifiction. He also made a tremendous impact when he sang – for the second year – the very demanding music for the Jewish High Holidays Yom Kipur and Kol Nidrei) at Temple Israel Synagogue in Greenpoint, where his musicality and superb handling of Hebrew was complimented by all. He was also part of the Oude Libertas cast of  Jaco Bouwer’s award-winning stage-production ” ‘n Ander Tongval“, with music by Braam du Toit, based on the book by Antjie Krog.

Friedel Mitas

Friedel Mitas grew up in the Little Karoo, Oudtshoorn. Currently 23 years old, she is completing her Performance Diploma in Opera and studying under Professor Virginia Davids. She has starred as Bystrouska in a collaborative production of UCT Opera School and Cape Town Opera, The Cunning little Vixen, by Janacek, and more recently as Corinna in the UCT Produciton Il Viaggo as Reims, by Rossini. As soloist, she has performed with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, for the Youth Concerto Festvial and sang with KZNPO at their National Youth Festival in 2009. In 2008 she won 3rd prize in the annual Schock Competition and just recently took 1st place in the Olitalia/Rialto foods competition, 2010. She has been performing as soloist in Oratorios namely: Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass, Mozart’s Coronation Mass in C, Mozart’s Requiem and Vivaldi’s Gloria. She will also be starring in one of the 5:20 Operas, Out of Time by Peter Louis van Dyk.
