Two mini concerts on one night…

Our French theme continues for the next Midweek Classical Session on 4 June with flautist Louisa Theart playing a ‘sneak peak’ of her new French concert programme. We have a special ‘fly in’ from tenor July Zuma– visiting from Germany who will perform French operatic arias and Louise Howlett will perform her favourite French songs – all accompanied by Albert Combrink on piano. The Classical mix runs from 19.30 – 20.30.

For the Jazz session – Albert Combrink and Louise Howlett will perform highlights from our ‘Night Sessions’ programme of easy listening jazz standards inspired by the night 20.45 to 21.45

Biography

Louisa Theart holds a BMUS (distinctions in flute and chamber music) from UCT  having been placed on the Dean’s Merit List for academic excellence. She went on to graduate from the Royal College of Music in London with an MMUS in Performance in 2012. In South Africa Louisa has studied with Bridget Rennie- Salonen and her English teachers include Trevor Wye, Sue Thomas and Simon Channing. She has had success in numerous music competitions having been a finalist and prizewinner in the ABSA National Youth Music Competition, The National Ensemble Competition, The UNISA Gr.8 competition as well as the Schock Foundation Prize for Chamber Music at UCT . She has appeared as a soloist with the KZNPO as well as the UCTSO. She has acted as a principal flute of various youth orchestras including the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival Orchestra, the National Youth Wind Ensemble and the UCT Symphony Orchestra. Highlights at the RCM include performing in the RCM Symphony Orchestra  under Lorin Maazel as well as being selected to perform in a public masterclass for Sir James Galway. She also performed in a variety of graduate orchestras in London including the London Mahler Orchestra and the University of London Symphony orchestra. Upon her return to South Africa, Louisa won the woodwind category prize at the ATKV Muziq competition 2012 as well as the Desmond Wilson Memorial Prize for the Best Interpretation of a Baroque work during the 2013 UNISA National Competition for Winds. She appears as an ad hoc orchestral musician on a regular basis performing with the CPO and Camarata Tinta Barocca. She is also a member of the Appassionata Wind Quintet.

‘Louise Howlett presents’ is a brand new concert experience with two pop-up Midweek Sessions in one evening. Classical works and easy listening jazz are performed together on one night under one roof at the Church on Greenmarket Square. Vocalist and concert manager Louise Howlett presents and performs in each session with pianist Albert Combrink, and there will be regular guest appearances by some of Cape Town’s finest classical and jazz musicians.

Be the first to hear a ‘sneak peek’ of new programmes being worked on, or enjoy old favourites being performed just for fun. Tickets are priced R60 for a session, or R100 for the full evening (student and pensioner discounts at the door). Great coffee and refreshments are available at Heaven Coffee at the venue, or why not combine a session with supper and drinks from one of restaurants on the square.

Tickets are available from Webtickets and at the door on the night. Doors at the Church on Greenmarket Square open at 19h00.

Future concerts take place 25 June, 9 & 30 July and then on into August and include flute, violin, cello and more.
