Ian Burghess-Simpson Pianos Sponsored the Kawai
What an unusual and striking venue for a recital! Beautiful Kawai provided by Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos — with Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos.
Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos sposnsored pianos for the festival. Without these high quality instruments, none of these wonderful music events would have been possible.
Albert Combrink on the Kawai
The piano was perfectly suited to the rich Acoustics and a delightfully clear and carrying singing tone. Thank you to Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos and the team who were there to ensure that the piano was in absolutely perfect concert-condition.

Beautiful paper and metal sculpture of a “Praying Mantis” or “Hottentotsgod” – “Cagn” (also known Kaang or Kaggen) is the supreme god of the San. He is the first being and the creator of the world. He is a trickster god who can shape-shift, most often into the praying mantis but also takes the form of a bull eland, a louse, a snake, and a caterpillar. In some variants of the San creation story, Cagn receives so much opposition in the world that he moves his abode from the earth to the top of the sky. Cagn is said to have created the moon which holds special significance to the San people; the phase of the moon dictated when rainmaking rituals were to be performed.
In order to truly appreciate the impact of the giant (almost human-size) paper sculpture, there was this beautiful photo on the wall with which to compare the artist’s vision.

About the Show:
These 2 musicians have worked together for over a decade on different stages in different countries.
In this show they will explore their cultures and their interests, centering around the Tango Music which they have been performing together for over a decade. They will perform Tango music from both their cultures, Bulgaria and South Africa, as well as some traditional tangos from the well-known Tango repertoire.
The idea for this show came during their tour to Germany where they performed in the prestigious Leipzig Gewandhaus, and performed in Tango Clubs in Berlin, Leipzig and Tubingen.
To fit in with the festival’s Beethoven Theme, the duo will play their own transcription of a rarely played mandolin duo by the great composer and Combrink will play “The Tempest” Sonata.
