NOT YOUR USUAL PIANO RECITAL:
CAMPANELLA – SOUNDING THE BELLS WITH CHOPIN AND LISZT –
ALBERT COMBRINK

Wednesday, 24 October, at 10:30 (Baxter Theatre)

Not your usual piano recital: Campanella – Sounding the bells with Chopin and Liszt.

In the Middle Ages it was believed that the sound of bells could disperse thunder. A large number of bell-ringers were electrocuted as a result. In France, 103 bell-ringers were killed in thunderstorms between 1753 and 1786 alone. Join pianist Albert Combrink in a much safer environment to explore music inspired by the sounds of bells. Combrink tells the stories behind virtuoso piano works by Liszt and Chopin and links them with entertaining anecdotes and a glass of wine or two. Not your usual piano recital, the programme includes Scherzos and Waltzes by Chopin and Etudes by Liszt. Prepare for a few surprises!

His playing can only be described in that most journalistic of cliches, stunning. Masterly technique and a formidable intellect combined to give a performance both professional and mature. –  Daily News

Combrink had the strength and temperament for Liszt’s grand gestures and the finesse for its lyrical demands. –  Sunday Herald
