“Adiós Nonino” (Farewell, granddad) is a composition by tango composer Ástor Piazzolla, written in October 1959 in when he was on a tour of central America. Piazzolla had just arrived from New York, depressed that his recent tour had been both an artistic and a fninacial disaster. Aaudiences in Argentina had rejected his introduction of Jazz elements into the traditional Tango. News of his father’s death, now far away in Argentina, saddened him deeply. The story goes that he locked himself in his room and emerged with a work in memory of his father, don Vicente “Nonino” Piazzolla.

The piece was based on his earlier tango “Nonino”, composed in Paris in 1954, of which he kept the rhythmic part and re-arranged the rest with some additions. It would prove to be one of Piazzolla’s most well-known and popular compositions, and has been recorded many times with many different arrangements and with various instruments. The piece became world famous when it was played at the royal wedding of crown prince (soon-to-be king) Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and princess (soon-to-be queen) Máxima Zorreguieta of the Netherlands.
