"Night Sessions", the new CD by Louise Howlett and Albert Combrink, follows the shape of many of their successful stage shows. Songs inspired by and set in the night are woven into a subtle "story" that take the listener on a journey through the lows and highs of love. Classic standards are presented in a new context, making the album an interesting narrative disc, as well as a special listening experience.

The easy-listening album takes listeners on a journey inspired by songs of love, loss and hope. The sound of the CD is intimate, giving the performers the chance to crystalise the meaning of the lyrics and communicate the meaning of each song as directly and beautifully as possible.
When you think of Tango, South-East Asia in general- and Singapore in particular - would not be the first thing that comes to mind. Yet there I had the wonderful pleasure of connecting with a passionate Tango Community, giving performances, Master-classes and Workshops, and doing presentations on the work of the CT Tango Ensemble.
Todd Matshikiza's delightful musical KING KONG is long overdue for revival. This concert features the Cape Town Opera Voice of the Nation Vocal Ensemble, and Cape Town Soprano Shirley Sutherland.

On 19 July 2009 Louise Howlett and I will be performing in the Kirstenbosch Chamber Music Breakfast Concert Series. Our programme reflects Louise’s trademark milti-genre approach to songs inspired by Moonlight. The programme includes songs by Arnold Schoenberg, Faure, Mozart, Bizet, Dvorak, Michel Legrand, and Stephen Sondheim.
The idea of one singer encompassing styles from Mozart to Bernstein strikes some as unusual, but when one respects song for what they are, instead of evaluating them on a system of classification, one arrives at some interesting insights. My work [read more…]
