An annual event, formerly in the guise of “Opera in a Convent Garden”, this has become one of the very special outdoor musical events the beautiful city of Cape Town has to offer. Audiences are entertained in the exquisite gardens of Springfield Convent, to a picnic concert which has for years consistently brought top artists before the public. This year, the singers comprise, as usual, the gamut of genres from Jazz, to musicals, pop to light opera. Our top team of performers include Radio Presenter & Cross-Over/Jazz songstress Louise Howlett, Soprano Diva Nombulelo Yende fast making a name for herself in the opera world, one of our top up-coming bass-baritones Bongani Kubheka, while Prize-Winning Royal Academy Graduate, flautist Sally Minter will introduce some virtuosic instrumental music into the programme, with some younger guest stars to fill out an exciting roster. Music-director Albert Combrink will direct an ensemble in a blend of styles to suit all tastes, from Opera, to Musical Theatre to pop. From Mozart’s loveable rogue “Don Giovanni” to the high drama of Puccini’s “Turandot” and “La Boheme”, serious music lovers will have enough classical music to feel content.

For those with broader tastes, favourites from “Les Miserables” as well as a few musical theatre surprises, awaits. Louise Howlett will sing an extract from Alice Gillham’s new South African Musical “Calling us Home” which opens in August this year.

Come and hear our guest chorus “iGugu Le Kapa” delight in the Easter Chorus from “Cavelleria Rusticana” and hear some joyous South African favourites like Shosholoza and more. The combined massed choir of Springfield Convent and Wynberg Boys will delight audiences with some Oscar Petersen to round out the evening.

Bring a Picnic basket and blanket, as the venue is child friendly and perfect for a sunset concert under the trees. Refreshments and drinks will be for sale at the event.
