Our own Cape Town Tango Ensemble, who happens to be the only Tango Orchestra in Africa, specializes in Tango music and specifically the music of Astor Piazzolla is bringing this highly successful show to the Winelands.
Besides the live music on stage Dance Floor Hire is kindly supplying one of their magnificent Dance Floors, so during the interval and after the show there will be a Milonga (Tango social event) for those who love to dance Tango.
In “Piazzolla & Beyond” they are presenting some of the most celebrated works of Astor Piazzolla as well as works of contemporary composers, whose music was inspired by the Tango Nuevo.
Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) tango nuevo was distinct from the traditional tango in its incorporation of elements of jazz, its use of extended harmonies and dissonance, its use of counterpoint, and its ventures into extended composition forms.
Piazzolla started his new style of music during the 1950s. It was completely rejected by the Tango purists in Argentina but it took Tango music from the dance halls of Buenos Aires to the Concert stages throughout the world. Piazzolla inspired many classical musicians to perform his music during his lifetime and after his death.
CT Tango Ensemble was established by the Classical Accordionist Stanislav Angelov in 1996. Since 1996 besides studying the music and most importantly the interpretation style of Astor Piazzolla the interest of this group of musicians spread into all styles of Tango music as well.
They have released 3 CDs (“El Tango en Africa” , “Tango Club” & “Tango Dreams), which are regularly played on Classic FM in Johannesburg & FMR in Cape Town as well as on many other radio stations in South Africa & abroad.
30 March 2011 – Premier of new South African Film “Visa Vie” in which 2 tracks from Tango Club are included in the sound track of the film – “Adios” & “Cape Town Tango”, both composed by Stanislav Angelov
13 April 2011 – “Tango Club” nominated for Best Instrumental Album for in the 17th MTN South African Music Awards.
In 2011 they were invited to tour Germany with their first concert, taking place at the prestigious Gewandhause in Leipzig, which was a great success.
In January 2014 they launched their latest CD “Tango Dreams” at ArtsCape Theater at a sold out show.
