Elegant arrangements of popular South African songs are interwoven with contemporary hits from the likes of Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand and the music of Astor Piazzolla lends a tango slant.

South African born Thomas De Bruin career started when he participated in national music competitions and also made several recordings for the SABC. Post school, he obtained his “Degré fin d’etude” at the National Conservatory of Lyon in France, where he studied for a year in 1997/98. He received a Pretorium Trust bursary during his final year of study, then completed his BMUS performance degree, cum laude, at the University of Pretoria and a Teacher’s Licentiate at UNISA (with flute as his main instrument).
He has performed as the principal flautist of The Pro Musica Orchestra in Johannesburg, performing in orchestral concerts, performing some of the “standard orchestral repertoire” and operas, such as Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Puccini’s La Bohéme to name two. As a member of The Johannesburg Festival Orchestra (playing flute and piccolo), he was involved in orchestral performances and has played for productions such as FNB’s “Swan Lake” and the Johannesburg performances of William Kentridge’s “Magic Flute” in 2007.
He has proven to be a versatile performer and has since performed as a soloist or has accompanied various artists during recitals, concerts, music festivals, cabarets, weddings and private functions. He has worked with pianists like Tertia Visser-Downie and Albert Combrink. He also collaborated with performance poet and pianist Lara Kirsten, for a project called The 3B’s: “Lost and Transcribed”, where Lara’s poetry was intertwined with the music of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. With this project, Thomas and Lara and has travelled nationally.
He currently resides in Cape Town as a freelance musician and teacher. He has released his first CD, “Unvoiced” in 2014; a selection of contemporary songs with piano accompaniment.

The gorgeous Ariella has been the group’s cellist from the start. If you don’t know Ariella, here are some background information about her…
Ariella Caira, a UCT Theatre and Performance honours graduate-turned cellist, is a Cape Town-based musician and the permanent member of SAMA award-winning all-girl instrumental pop group Sterling EQ. The band has enjoyed local and international success, performing in 11 different countries, including Turkey, India, Seychelles and UAE, featuring frequently in the media and on television shows and having released two albums and a DVD independently and a third album, Pulse, through EMI South Africa (now Universal). Originally classically trained, Ariella has a passion for chamber music and ensemble playing, having performed in many orchestras and quartets over the years, including Wired, ACE and Simply Strings. She collaborates frequently with other musicians and has recorded for a variety of artists and genres including; Jeremy Loops, Markus Wormstorm, Breakfast Included, Dan Shout, Shen Winberg, Nicky Schrire, Larry Joe and many others. Ariella also teaches cello at St Cyprian’s School for Girls in Cape Town and when not making music, can be found baking (she holds an IHESA Diploma in Patisserie) travelling or practicing yoga, a passion which lead her to undertake her yoga teacher training in Vinyasa Flow-Power yoga through The Yoga Life in Cape Town in 2014. #AriellaCaira #triodemusique#MozartPianoTrios2019
Albert Combrink has been the pianist of “Trio de Musique” since the start of the group in 2016 and a legend in the musical world of Cape town. We are so honored to have him playing some of the Mozart trios with the “Trio de Musique”.
If you don’t know Albert, here is some background information about him..
He completed his MMUS in Piano Performance from Natal University under Isabella Stengel, as well as three UNISA Licentiates: Piano Performance, Piano Accompaniment and Teaching (Cum Laude). He made his concerto and recording debut with the NPO at 18. Since then he has performed regularly at major centres throughout the country, as soloist and accompanist, in both classical and popular music fields. He was finalist in the ATKV Music Competition and winner of the Young Natal Chamber Competition and UND Performer’s and Composer’s competitions after which he was commissioned to write to first Afrikaans Catholic Mass. He has extensive recording experience and he was repetiteur for the UCT Opera School as well as Cape Town Opera. His operatic experience with CPO included international touring productions of “Showboat” and “Porgy and Bess” (Sweden and Germany). He has acted and recorded for the eTv show “Backstage” and “Stokvel” and been involved in various film projects. As member of the Cape Town Tango Ensemble he has performed at all the major festivals in the country. His work with CT Tango Ensemble has featured in films such as “Tango Club” and “Visa/Vie” and has been nominated for a prestigious MTN SAMA AWARD (Best Instrumental Album). He has worked with directors such as Janice Honeyman, Jaco Bouwer and Marthinus Basson. He was vocal coach for the Portabello Copmany, whose production of Mozart’s “Magic Flute” won a London Critics’ “Olivier Award” in 2008, and has toured Ireland, Japan and Singapore. He has also been Music Director and Assistant MD for various productions including the New Space Theatre’s production of Sondheim’s “Assassins” which won two Fleur du Cap Awards. His collaboration with singer Louise Howlett, which resulted in the CD “Night Sessions” and they perform regularly in Classical and lighter repertoire. He is co-author of 3 Arts & Culture Textbooks which have sold over 100 000 copies. He is much sought after as an accompanist and vocal coach, having worked with international figures such as Pretty Yende, Katherine Jenkins, Arno Carstens, Claire Johnstone, Neil Shicoff and Lesley Garrett. He is a winner of a Fiesta Award for co-writing and performing in “Hunkering na die Ses” at the 2016 SuidOosterFees with Lynelle Kenned and Clint Lesch
