Sweeter than Roses” is a semi-staged multi-genre programme of songs for Valentine’s Day – Opera, to Musicals to Jazz. Using the evocative architectural space of the Cape Town Central Library to combine the  talents of young operatic stars Mpofu and Kemane with cross-over specialist Howlett, creates exciting opportunities for story-telling, for hearing familiar songs in a new context and for offering something new to even the most discerning music-lover.

Nomsa Mpofu and Thesele Kemane – recent graduates from the UCT Opera School – have already performed in various opera productions both locally and abroad including the United Nations Assembly. Royal College of Music graduate Louise Howlett, well-known for her ease in multi-genre productions, exploits her versatility from Opera to Jazz. Albert Combrink on the piano has been successful in both classical and popular music fields and flows seamlessly from style to style, providing the musical glue that holds the styles together in a unified whole.

Puccini and Mozart operas rub shoulders with Jerome Kern and Stephen Sondheim, in a show that explores the ups and downs of love seen through the eyes of  musicians. The programme is presented without an interval in the magnificent acoustics of the Cape Town Central Library. A unique venue for a unique programme.
