POLICIES AND PROFILE OF THE ADELE SEARLL MOUNT NELSON 100 CLUB

The Adèle Searll 100 Club was founded in 1979 by a group of women from Cape Town’s business and professional circles who were also known for their active interest in welfare and community projects.

With the untimely death in March 1998 of Adèle Searll, its chairman and founder member, the committee and members, as a gesture of respect changed its name to the Adèle Searll 100 Club.  The committee appointed a new chairman, June Druker who assumed the position in June 1998, followed by Judith Dodds. Jackie Lange was appointed chair in July 2006 and remains its chairman.

From its inception, the 100 Club’s motivation has been to attract members from all sectors of the community successfully bringing together women who are representative of our diverse society.  It offers members the opportunity of networking – both professionally and socially and attracts speakers of the highest calibre in all fields, ranging from ex Presidents Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and FW de Klerk, to well-known authors businessmen, theatrical personalities and many others. Recent speakers have been Pieter Dirk-Uys, Christo Wiese, Prof Jonathan Jansen. Maria Ramos CEO of ABSA is our guest speakers on 5 November.

In 1983 the 100 Club Bursary Fund was established with the purpose of supporting underprivileged students at the University of Cape Town and other educational institutions in the Western Cape and this fund has in fact now become the raison d’être of the club.  Two of our bursars have gone on to study at Harvard. So far more than 100 students have received financial aid from the Club, which also supports social causes and charity organisations on an annual basis.

As the Club is totally self-supporting and non-profit making – its running costs provided solely from the income generated by subscriptions and our lunch meetings – our speakers and entertainers offer their services gratis, a gesture for which we are eternally grateful as the Club could not otherwise survive. Proceeds from our monthly raffle are distributed at the end of each year to about 20 different needy charities and a special charity is chosen each year which benefits from the proceeds of our Christmas lunch.

Our members are committed and concerned citizens and their loyal support over the years has allowed the Club to grow and establish the high credibility it now enjoys.
