24 year-old Lynelle hails from Paarl and, growing up in a musical community, learnt to appreciate classical music at an early age. In 2005 she received an Exhibition Award from the Trinity International Board of Examinations for the highest mark for a practical exam in South Africa. After forming part of the South African Youth Choir and Stellenberg Girls’ Choir, she enrolled at the UCT Opera School, studying under Professors Virginia Davids and Kamal Khan. Lynelle has been the recipient of the Class Medalist Award in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Her awards include the Chisholm Prize for meritorious work in opera in 2009, as well as the Gregorio Fiasconaro Prize in 2010. She was a finalist in the 2010 Schock competition. She has sung the roles of Frantik and Grasshopper in the 2009 production of Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Maddalena in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims in 2010, Cherubino in 2 piano productions of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (Cape Town and Rhode Island) and again in Opera Africa’s production with JPO (July 2011), Musetta in the UCT Opera School’s production of Puccini’s La Boheme (May 2011) and Blondchen in Mozart’s “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” (Nov 2011). In August of 2010 she made her debut as soloist with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra at the Youth Music Festival. She played Bird 2 in the world premiere of Van Dijk’s Out of Time as part of the 5:20 operas. Lynelle was the soprano soloist for Handels’s Messiah for CPO’s 2011 Good Friday concert, and Bach’s St Matthew Passion in Johannesburg’s Linder Auditorium in 2012. She is currently completing her Honours degree after graduating from the Performer’s Diploma in Opera with distinction in 2010.
Lynelle formed part of the new Diva Supergroup, the South African Sopranos, consisting of 5 opera divas. They plan to take the country by storm, with upcoming performances at the Suidooster Fees, and the KKNK among others.
