Ice Violin

Imagine a cold and dark northern midwinter.
In the dark night, a traveller stumbles through the snow, exhausted.
The wind is howling and the tattered coat is past its years of keeping out the cold.
The traveller stumbles and tries to get up, but is exhausted, fearing the night will prove too long, too cold.

The traveller is not alone in the dark.
From the shadows, the faintest strains of a violin can be heard
But its sound is unlike any violin you have ever heard.
The companion is never seen, only ever heard, and only at night.

The violin has strings made of ice.
He bides his time. Unhurriedly a bony finger finds the notes.
He plays his tune, sometimes so gently one can not be sure it is not the wind.
Sometimes, so wildly that it drowns the sound of the stormy wind in a torrent of notes.

He plays all night.
On his Ice Violin.
A lullaby.
For the dead.
