Katherine Jenkins, Lynelle Kenned & Albert Combrink (Piano)
The complete broadcast of Lynelle’s interview and the duet performance.
As part of her quest in the “My Top Billing Dream” Presenter Search SABC3’s “Top Billing”, Lynelle Kenned, a classically trained opera singer, was given the task of interviewing the Welsh Mezzo-soprano Cross-over superstar Katherine Jenkins.
Earlier in the day Lynelle – a Soprano graduate of the UCT Opera School – performed the arias “O Mio Babbino Caro” from Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi” and the Bach/Gounod “Ave Maria” in an interview/masterclass, which was filmed Live for SABC TV. Katherine Jenkins was so impressed with the performance that she agreed to perform a Duet with Lynelle, accompanied by Albert.
They perform the “Flower Duet” from the opera “Lakme” by Leo Delibes: (“Sous le dôme épais”) The opening section “Viens, Mallika, les lianes en fleurs” was edited out of the final broadcast and the duet is unfortunately shortened by the production team to fit into the time requirements of the insert.

This picture is from the Master Class in the morning where Lynelle sang Puccini’s “O mio Babbino Caro” and the Bach/Gounod “Ave Maria” that impressed Katherine Jenkins so much that she invited Lynelle to perform the Lakme Duet with her. My “audition” included an impromptu run of the duet. I didn’t have any music there and had to recall it from memory. A pianist’s life!
