Live Recording Broadcast on SABC3′ “Top Billing”

As part of her quest in the “My Top Billing Dream” Presenter Search SABC3’s “Top Billing”, Lynelle Kenned, a classically trained opera singer Soprano was given the task of interviewing the Welsh Mezzo-soprano Cross-over superstar Katherine Jenkins, currently in South Africa on a concert tour of major venues.

Earlier in the day Lynelle performed the arias “O Mio Babbino Caro” from Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi” and the Bach/Gounod “Ave Maria” in an interview/masterclass, which was filmed Live for SABC TV. Katherine Jenkins was so impressed with the performance that she agreed to perform a Duet with Lynelle, accompanied by Albert.

They perform the “Flower Duet” from the opera “Lakme” by Leo Delibes: (“Sous le dôme épais”) The opening section “Viens, Mallika, les lianes en fleurs” was edited out of the final broadcast and the duet is unfortunately shortened by the production team to fit into the time requirements of the insert.

Léo Delibes’ opera Lakmé, was first performed in Paris in 1883. The duet takes place in Act 1 of the three act opera, between Lakmé, the daughter of a Brahmin priest (Soprano), and her servant Mallika (Mezzo-Soprano), as they go to gather flowers by a river.

Translation and Original Text:

English:

Thick dome of jasmine
Blends with the rose
Bank of fresh morning flowers
We call together
Ah! Glide along
The fleeing current
On the rippling surface
With a lazy hand
Reach the shore
The bird sings, the bird, the bird sings
Thick dome, white jasmine
We call together

French:

Dôme épais le jasmin
A la rose s’assemble
Rive en fleurs frais matin
Nous appellent ensemble
Ah! glissons en suivant
Le courant fuyant
Dans l’onde frémissante
D’une main nonchalante
Gagnons le bord,
Où l’oiseau chante, l’oiseau, l’oiseau chante
Dôme épais, blanc jasmin
Nous appellent ensemble!
